This nationally-recognized program promotes breast, cervical, prostate and colorectal cancer screening among patients of local federally-qualified Community Health Centers (CHC).
In corporation with healthcare partners, the Cancer Coalition's Center to Reduce Cancer Disparities employs Community Health Navigators. These Navigators coordinate and facilitate cancer screening services for uninsured and underinsured residents of southwest Georgia. The Navigators work in cooperation with CHC clinics and local health departments serving rural communities to identify and care for patients in need of cancer screening services.
Each Navigator provides one-on-one education and assists patients in getting access to free or low-cost screening services. The program provides for mammograms (breast cancer screening), Pap tests (cervical cancer screening), prostate cancer screening, and colonoscopies (colon and rectal cancer screening) for eligible residents. Since 2006, we have served more than 250 uninsured residents of Baker, Ben Hill, Coffee, Dougherty, Early, Irwin, Mitchell and Terrell counties.
In 2007, CNN highlighted our program on a nationally televised special with Lance Armstrong and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. In addition, both the Georgia Department of Human Resources and the Georgia Cancer Coalition recognize our Community Cancer Screening Program SM as a successful model for reducing cancer-related disparities.
