The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition Education Program is committed to meeting the unique educational needs of our oncology professionals and patients. Because the majority of our 33 county region is rural, it is often difficult for many cancer patients to receive timely and effective diagnosis, treatment and education. The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition recognizes this disparity and is seeking to address it through a videoconferencing network that will allow our regional specialty cancer centers to connect with one another as well as specialists from around the state and nation – to better serve our patients and their families in Southwest Georgia.

- Clinical Consultations
This regional videoconferencing system will facilitate the interaction of rural primary care physicians with specialists such as radiologists, oncologists, hematologists and surgeons or other oncology specialists. The benefit of clinical consultations to the cancer patient is that they will receive the most appropriate treatment plan, through multi-discipline interactions among cancer professionals.
- Professional Education
It is vital that healthcare professionals have access to the newly emerging advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Videoconferencing technology will allow physicians as well as allied health professionals in nursing, radiology, nutrition and social work and related fields to have access to the most current developments in cancer medicine. This system will allow health professionals to share with one another information on topics such as clinical trials, new treatment protocols and prevention and early detection practices. Videoconferencing programs will also enable the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition to provide continuing medical education units for professional licensing requirements through the appropriate organizations.
- Patient Education
There is a direct correlation between health education and prevention and management of disease. Our patient education programs are being designed to educate and inform patients and their families about general wellness and specific cancer related topics. Program content will range from nutrition and exercise to treatment options for breast cancer. These programs can be accessed from rural areas through live videoconferencing or through this website’s archived programs.
