Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition Announces New Board Members


Albany, GA, July 2008 - The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition, a local, non-profit leader in promoting cancer education, prevention, screening, treatment and research throughout the region, announces the addition of four new members to its Board of Directors.

“We are pleased that these individuals have agreed to join us in our mission to provide access to community cancer services in southwest Georgia,” said Board Chairman James McGahee, CEO of South Georgia Medical Center. “This is an exciting time for the Coalition and we are poised to take full advantage of the expertise that these talented new board members bring to the organization.”

Newest members are Dr. Jacqueline Grant, Southwest District Health Director; Terri Lupo, Georgia Power Company South Region Vice President; J. Perry Mustian, Archbold Memorial Hospital President/CEO; and Richard Royal, former State Representative and owner of Royal Petroleum Products. (See bios, below)

The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition is a regional 501c(3) non profit organization covering the 33 counties of Southwest Georgia. The Cancer Coalition’s mission is to ensure that Southwest Georgians have access to the highest quality cancer education, prevention, screening, treatment and research. Dr. Jacqueline Grant - Southwest District Health Director, Southwest Georgia Public Health District
Jacqueline Grant, MD, MPH, MPA, manages and provides direction to 14 county health departments and district programs, including environmental health, communicable diseases, emergency preparedness, oral health, and women's and child health. In addition to serving as the chief executive officer of the health district's county boards of health, she works cooperatively with the State Public Health Director, community partners, and local officials regarding public health issues.

Previously, Dr. Grant served as the medical director of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Missouri in Columbia. While there, she received national recognition in "Best Doctors of America, 2003–2004." In 1992, Dr. Grant completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA, where she served as chief administrative resident. She later enjoyed a thriving private practice and faculty positions at Emory University, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Dr. Grant received a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and an M.P.H. degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, before earning a doctor of medicine degree from the Morehouse School of Medicine in 1988. As a CFHU Fellow, she earned a M.P.A. degree from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2005.


Terri Lupo - Vice President, South Region, Georgia Power Company
Terri Lupo has been with the Georgia Power Company for 25 years and was selected as Vice President of South Region in February 2005. Prior to coming to Valdosta, Ms. Lupo was Region Manager in Rome and previously was an Area Manager in both Gainesville and Madison. During the early part of her career, she worked in both the customer service and sales organizations.

A native of Toccoa, Georgia, Ms. Lupo received her BBA from Columbus State University, and her MBA from Mercer University. She completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School in 2000. Ms. Lupo is married to Jerry Lupo and they have one daughter.


J. Perry Mustian - President/CEO, John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital
Perry Mustian is a native of Gainesville, Florida, and grew up in Tallahassee.
Effective April 25, 2008, Mr. Mustian was named President/CEO of Archbold Memorial Hospital. From 2003 until April of 2008, he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Archbold. Previously he worked as director of Archbold’s affiliate network, which includes four community hospitals, four nursing homes and other facilities in Grady, Mitchell, Brooks, Early and Jefferson (Fla.) counties.
He earned a master’s degree in health administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations at the University of Florida. He recently was named a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The title of Fellow, held by only 5,400 of the society’s 30,000 members, signifies board certification in healthcare management, the society’s highest level of professional development. Mr. Mustian also is a Fellow of The Advisory Board Company’s Academy Fellowship.


Richard Royal - Owner, Royal Petroleum Products, Inc.
Former State Representative Richard Royal was elected to the House of Representatives in 1983 and served until relinquishing his seat in May, 2008. He had represented the 171st District, which included the counties of Mitchell and Colquitt. He had served on the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee as Chairman, Appropriations, Natural Resources and Environment, and Ways & Means Committees where he also served as Chairman of the Property Tax Sub-committee. The legislator was also appointed to the Tobacco Advisory Committee and to the Fiscal Affairs Committee.

Mr. Royal attended Mitchell County High School and The Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to his service in the House of Representatives, Mr. Royal served on the Camilla City Council for ten years. He received multiple awards and honors for leadership from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia and The Georgia Municipal Association. In 2003, Mr. Royal became the first recipient of the Presidential Citation from Georgia Tech.

Mr. Royal and his wife, Marilyn, have five children and nine grandchildren. He is a deacon at Pebble City Baptist Church and has been a Sunday school teacher for over 24 years. He also is a business owner and a consultant for the petroleum industry.
