Emory Prevention Research Center Grants $28,000 to Promote Healthier Eating in
Southwest Georgia Churches and Worksites

Atlanta, GA – February 22, 2007 – The Emory Prevention Research Center (EPRC), along with
local partners, including the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition, awarded $28,000 in grants to
various churches and worksites in Sylvester, Pelham, Albany, Bainbridge, Blakely, and
Valdosta. These grants will be used to implement the Body & Soul or the Treatwell 5-A-Day
Program. Both have already been shown to improve nutrition by educating and encouraging
participants to eat healthier. The recipients are: Sylvester New Beginning Missionary Baptist
Church; Pleasant Grove Complex Center Incorporation; New Birth Fellowship Church; Union
Mission Outreach Center, Inc.; Shaw Industries Group, Inc. Plant 70 & 86; Spring Creek Health
Cooperative; and South Georgia Medical Center.

Each recipient organization will receive up to $4,000 and staff assistance from the Emory
Prevention Research Center. Churches will implement the Body & Soul Program, and worksites
will implement the Treatwell 5-A-Day Program.

Darrell Sabbs, a member of the EPRC Community Advisory Board, expresses his enthusiasm
for this grant program: “Thanks to the Emory Prevention Research Center and the Southwest
Georgia Cancer Coalition for supporting organizations here in Southwest Georgia to promote
healthier lifestyles. These organizations will in turn impact so many people—we are helping
communities help themselves.”

The Emory Prevention Research Center is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. The EPRC focuses on cancer prevention in Southwest Georgia by promoting
healthy eating and exercise. To learn more about the Emory Prevention Research Center and
