Biographical Sketch
Dr. Debbie Weaver, RN
I have been a registered nurse since 1975 and have worked fulltime in a variety of settings. My specialty was critical care and adult health. I have been a nursing educator since 1987 employed by Valdosta State University. In 1999, I decided to change from critical care nursing to end-of-life care. Summer 2000 I earned my PhD in nursing education from Georgia State University. Currently, I teach fulltime in the adult health courses and work PRN with Hospice of South Georgia.
My interest in cancer began many years ago but intensified when my mother was diagnosed with Stage IIIC ovarian cancer in 1995. Her struggle with chemotherapy after surgery and ultimate palliative care nine months later became an impetus for my continued interest. Because of that interest, I currently serve on the Bioethics Committee at South Georgia Medical Center to review and approve cancer treatment research protocols. This community service is a wonderful experience and keeps me informed about new treatment possibilities.
I am very interested in health promotion, risk reduction, and health maintenance for individuals and communities. By staying active in the Valdosta/Lowndes area communities and the Berrien county communities, I have access to groups and individuals who are also interested in improving the health of those around them.
